Father's Day Fishing Trip

Being a super dad is hard. Plan a fishing trip this Father's Day that the entire family can enjoy.

Father’s Day is fast approaching and if you’re still looking for a fun activity to do then we highly recommend taking a fishing trip with the family. Planning any family outing can be a hassle, so here are a few tips for a successful fishing trip.

Location

Do some research on what location you want to go to for the fishing trip. If you are with your family, especially with little kids, you want to pick a location that is easily accessible. Also, consider looking for a place that has restrooms nearby. You can try looking into some local state parks since they usually fit these criteria.

You also want to make sure they are plenty of fish in the area of your choosing. Take into consideration the climate in your area and which fishes thrive in different times of yours. Talking to people and reading up on fishing forums might also help determine if an area is a good fishing location.

Packing the Essentials

If you’re going on a fishing excursion, make sure to have all your bases covered with a few essentials.

Regardless if it’s sunny or cloudy, sunscreen is a must. UV rays still manage to come through even on cloudy days, and you can definitely still get sunburned.

Bring bug spray, or you might regret it later. Bugs like to gather in still bodies of water. So if you fish in a pond or lake, especially one surrounded by trees, you should be aware that bug will probably be around. Instead of swatting away mosquitoes the whole time, bring bug spray and keep those annoying bugs at bay.

Another essential you don’t want to forget is sunglasses. You not only want them to protect your eyes but also to be able to see fish that are under the surface of the water. In the article, “What Polarized Sunglasses to Wear When Fishing”, we go more in depth about the benefits of polarized sunglasses. But for inshore fishing, our Bronze and Brown lenses from Fuse are recommended.

Also, consider bringing other helpful small items on your fishing trip. A hat can help keep the sun off your face. Wet wipes can help for quick cleaning before a snack or after a messy catch.

Bait

If you have young children a fun option might be to catch your own bait. You and the little ones can go looking in the soil for worms. However, if that’s not something that appeals to you, buying your bait is still always a great option. Consider purchasing a bait that appeals to a variety of fish like waxworms.

Fishing Gear

If you are fishing with little ones, make sure you buy them kid-sized equipment that will be easier for them to handle. This will create less frustration for them and for you. This is also a cool way to bond with your kids; when you teach them how to fish.

Other Tips

Consider keeping the trip short. Kids get bored easily, so hearing them whine might make the fishing trip less enjoyable. Unless you have other activities for them planned, usually trips around two or three hours are ideal.

You want to make sure to bring snacks and plenty of water. People will get hungry, so bringing things like chips, fruit or a sandwich will make everyone happy. You also want to make sure everyone stays hydrated to make this a pleasurable experience.

If you are a first-time fisher, you will need to acquire a fishing license! Fees vary from state to state, but in most places children under 16 are free.

Overall, don’t forget to have fun!

The most important thing is to have fun. Congratulations and happy Father's Day.
